प्राकृतिक जगत में आप देह हैं और मर जाते हैं। मानसिक जगत में भी लाभ-हानि आप अनुभव करते हैं, गरीब-अमीर होते हैं चाहे भौतिक जगत से हों पर होते मन में हैं। धन बाहर है पर अमीर कहाँ रहता है? दिमाग में। बड़े कहाँ होते हो? दिमाग में। देह बाहर है, मौत कहाँ होती है? मौत तुम्हारे मन में होती है। ये चेतना दृश्य से तादात्म्य करती है, वह भी पूरे दृश्य से नहीं सिर्फ एक दृश्य से तादात्म्य करती है। इसी का नाम जीव है। एक से तादात्म्य कर लेती है जैसे, जल में एक लहर से तादात्म्य कर लिया । एक लहर से तादात्म्य हुआ अर्थात् सागर लहर बन गया। “सागर सीप समाना जीव।” सागर लहर में समा गया। अब ये सागर लहर बन गया। तो लहर बने हुए सागर को अनेक दिखने लगते हैं।
इसी तरह जब ब्रह्म ही आत्मा, आत्मा ही जीव और देह बन गया या ऐसा मानने लगा तो सारी सृष्टि खड़ी हो गई। सब बखेड़ा हो गया। इसलिए लौटो, थोड़ी देर को जाओ। सदा भी नहीं रहोगे। जो जाता है वह लौट आता है। जिसका ध्यान लगता है वह छूट भी जाता है। भगवान शिव स्वरूप का स्मरण करते हैं। यद्यपि उनके परमात्मा श्री राम सृष्टि में है पर “संकर सहज सरूपु सम्हारा” शंकर भगवान ने अपने स्वरूप का स्मरण किया अर्थात् देह का नहीं किया, अपनी इंद्रियों का नहीं किया, अपने मन का नहीं किया। शंकर सहज स्वरूप सँभारा और हम को सँभारना भी पड़े स्वरूप को तो बड़ी मेहनत है। सहज है ही नहीं। उनको पता है इसलिए सहज सँभाल लिया।
