गुरुजी कह रहे थे कि तुम निर्विकार हो जाओगे, तुम अविनाशी हो जाओगे; यह सुनकर देहाभिमानी अविनाशी बनने के लिए चला। लेकिन गुरुजी के चेले बनने के बाद भी देह  बूढ़ा हो गया। देखो, मैं भी बूढ़ा हो गया हूँ न!  पर एक बात है, जब तक बुढ़ापा आया तब तक समझ बदल गई। गुरुजी के पास आए थे मरने से बचने के लिए तो गुरुजी ने समझा दिया कि शरीर मैं नहीं हूँ। गुरुजी के पास आये थे निर्विकार होने के लिए, गुणातीत होने के लिए तो गुरुजी ने समझा दिया कि  गुण मैं नहीं हूँ। गुणातीत होना नहीं है, गुणातीत हूँ। गुणों  के रहते, गुणों के बदलते मैं  गुणातीत हूँ।  जाग्रत, स्वप्न, सुषुप्ति ये तीनों गुणों की अवस्थाएं हैं। सुषुप्ति तमोगुण की अवस्था है, स्वप्न रजोगुण की और जाग्रत सत्त्व गुण  की अवस्था है।  और मैं इनका साक्षी गुणातीत हूँ। शंकर भगवान तमोगुण के देवता है पर वे गुणातीत हैं। विष्णु भगवान सत्त्वगुण के देवता हैं पर वे गुणातीत हैं। ब्रह्मा जी रजोगुण के देवता हैं पर वे गुणातीत हैं। गुण हैं तो शरीर है पर आप शरीर नहीं हो। शंकराचार्य कहते हैंः  नाहं देहोऽहमात्मेति।  मैं देह नहीं हूँ। ये शब्द कब बोले?  जब उनका देह नहीं था तब बोले क्या? नहीं, देह के रहते बोले कि मैं देह नहीं  हूँ। गुणों के रहते तुम गुणातीत हो सकते हो। जब गुण ही नहीं होंगे तो गुणातीत कैसे?  नदी ही न हो तो पार कैसे किया?  पार तो तभी करते जब नदी हो।

     गुण हैं, गुण देखते हैं, परिवर्तन दिखता है और इसी में देखना है कि मेरा परिवर्तन नहीं होता। परिवर्तन बंद हो जाए तब तो मूर्ख भी देख लेगा।  परिवर्तन बंद नहीं होता तब भी देखना है कि मेरा परिवर्तन नहीं होता।
