अच्छे गायकों के बीच में कई बार अनिभिज्ञ भी बैठते हैं जो उस विद्या के जानकार नहीं हैं फिर भी वे गायकी का आनंद लेते हैं। यद्यपि वे ज्यादा गहराई में तो नहीं जाते पर गायकी का आनंद लेते हैं। इसी तरह इस सृष्टि की भी बड़ी गहराई है और इस सृष्टि का रहस्य मनुष्य ही जान सकता है। वह भी तब जब कोई गुरुमुख जनाए। इसलिए यह भी आश्चर्य है। “आश्चर्यवत्  पश्यति कश्चित् एनम्।”
   
      किसी किसी को गुरुओं पर, ग्रंथों पर, ऋषियों की सोच पर आश्चर्य होता है। एक मूर्ख से कहो कि जगत कुछ भी नहीं है, ब्रह्म ही ब्रह्म है तो उसे क्या आनंद आएगा?  करोड़ों लोग ऐसे हैं जो ईश्वर को, ब्रह्म को गप्प मानते हैं। यदि उनसे कोई ब्रह्मवेत्ता शास्त्रार्थ करे और कह दे कि जगत नहीं है तो वह हार जाएगा। क्योंकि सब गवाही उसके होंगे। कहते हैं कि उल्लुओं ने अपने समाज में प्रस्ताव पास करा लिया कि सूर्य नहीं है जैसे, तमाम राजनैतिक व धार्मिक नास्तिक लोग कहते हैं कि यह ईश्वर है ही नहीं। कभी- कभी आपको भी लगता होगा कि पता नहीं कि ईश्वर है भी  या नहीं? यह भी एक झंझट ही है।  इसलिए बहुत से लोग ज्यादा इस पचड़े में नहीं पड़ते।  फिर भी हम लोग पता नहीं तुम्हें इस पचड़े में क्यों फँसाते हैं? जैसे नशेड़ी नशे की आदत डलवाता है ऐसे ही हम लोग तुम्हें बिना मतलब के इस पचड़े में डाले हुए।
मैं झूठ नहीं बोलता,  कभी-कभी लगता है कि तुम्हें इस पचड़े में न डालूँ । तुम से कह दूं कि जाओ आराम से पति की सेवा करो, घर का काम करो, बच्चों को पढ़ाओ-लिखाओ, देश का ख्याल करो। बाकी संत भी आपको इस पचड़े में कम डाल रहे हैं। वे सीधा-सीधा आपके काम की बात करते हैं, देश की बात करते हैं। और हम आपको पचड़े में डाले हुए हैं। क्यों पचड़ा कहते हैं? क्योंकि इसका लाभ तुम्हें अभी समझ ही नहीं आता । और हमें क्या लगता है? कि सब लाभ हो जाएं पर इस लाभ के बिना कोई लाभ लाभ नहीं है।
यं लब्ध्वा चापरं लाभं मन्यते नाधिकं ततः।

     क्या इससे बड़ा कोई लाभ है? या ऐसा कोई लाभ जो हानि में न बदल जाए? ऐसा कोई लाभ बताओ जिसमें हानि ना हो?  पुत्र हुआ तो क्या हानि नहीं होनी?  कुछ सुख मिला तो क्या वह जाएगा नहीं? सब जाता है। नहीं जाने वाला कोई तत्व है तो वही एक है और तो सब मात्र प्रतीति हैं। वे रहें तो क्या, ना रहें तो क्या ? दिखें तो क्या, ना दिखें तो क्या?  क्या फर्क पड़ता है इनके होने, ना होने का।

इसलिए वेदांत सुनने के पहले विवेक और वैराग्य जरूरी हैं और इसके साथ ही शरीर रहते थोड़ा कष्ट सहने के लिए तैयार होना, थोड़ा संयम रखना, प्रारब्धवशात् कष्ट आएंगे। शरीर है तो कष्ट आएंगे। हमें भी कष्ट हुए हैं। यदि यह समझें कि कष्ट नहीं होना चाहिए, हम तो परमात्मा के रास्ते पर चल रहे हैं तो ज्ञान निष्ठा में फिर पक्के नहीं हो पाओगे। इसलिए  यदि कष्ट आएं तो उन्हें झेलो। दुःख मिला, दुःख मालूम पड़ा लेकिन दुःख से हमारे अपने मोक्ष के प्रति भय नहीं होना चाहिए।

गुरु क्या हैं ?  गुरु बोध रूप हैं, चैतन्य रूप हैं, आत्म रूप हैं और साक्षी रूप हैं। गुरु साक्षी हैं। आपकी बुद्धि में जो साक्षी है, वह गुरु ही हैं। वे आपके भीतर बैठे हैं और आपको जान रहे हैं। आपके संकल्प को, आपकी वृत्ति को, आपकी चंचलता को, आपकी स्थिरता को परमात्मा जान रहे हैं। गुरु जान रहे हैं। परमात्मा आपके ह्दय में विराजमान हैं। वे आपके मन की एक – एक सैकण्ड की गति – विधि को जान रहे हैं। वे आपके सुमिरन को और श्वास की प्रक्रिया को भी जान रहे हैं। गुरु आपके भीतर विराजमान हैं। जिस दिन आप यह स्वीकार कर लेगें कि बाहर के इष्ट गुरु, बाहर के इष्ट परमात्मा आपके मन को जानने वाले हैं; आपकी बुद्धि के साक्षी हैं; आपके मन के प्रत्येक संकल्प को जानते हैं; उसी दिन आपको यह स्पष्ट हो जायेगा कि वे ही गुरु तुम्हारे भीतर हैं। उनसे कुछ छिपा नहीं है। वो जो स्वयं ब्रह्म होकर इस ब्रह्मांड में विराजमान हैं और वैसा ही जो तुम्हें बनाने आये हैं जो तुम अपने को सिर्फ अमुक शरीर ही समझे बैठे हो।
